Role of the CMC

The CMC is tasked with combating and reducing the incidence of organised crime and networked paedophilia, and other serious crime such as fraud, murder, arson, and terrorism.
How we fight crime
Our strategy for fighting major crime is based on attacking the vulnerabilities of criminal syndicates by confiscating the proceeds of crime and using our coercive hearings power in conducting investigations.
How crime matters come to us
Our power to investigate major crime is based on a system of ‘general’ and ’specific’ referrals from the Crime Reference Committee, a statutory body established under the Crime and Misconduct Act.
Investigations requested by other agencies
A portion of our work is in support of investigations referred from partner agencies, who seek access to our special investigative powers, especially the power to hold coercive hearings.
