Light shed on funding for soccer field — 17.03.2009

A Crime and Misconduct Commission investigation has found that the approval of a $130 000 state government grant to the Mitchelton Soccer Club for the installation of lighting was transparent and complied with applicable protocols.

Allegations that the grant had been subjected to improper political interference were referred to the CMC earlier this year.

The CMC examined applications made by the Soccer Club over two years and interviewed various individuals including departmental officers who had dealt with the applications.

The evidence reveals that the Club’s 2007 application for funding was unsuccessful because priority was given to the funding of water saving measures. The Club submitted a similar application in 2008 and the application was approved.

There is no basis to suspect that either application had been subjected to political interference or undue influence.
