Police and the CMC

Police and the CMC The CMC aims to keep Queensland communities as safe as possible from crime and corruption, and promote high standards in police integrity.

To do so, we partner with Queensland police in fighting crime; research police powers and policing methods; and oversee integrity and accountability in the Queensland Police Service.

In focus
  • Suspended sentence for former sergeant: As a result of our investigation into allegations that a Logan District police sergeant was supplying ecstasy and amphetamines, former police sergeant Natasha Fewson has been given a suspended sentence for possessing and supplying dangerous drugs. Read more about Operation Nighthawk.
  • New QPS gifts and benefits policy: In response to our Operation Tesco investigation, Queensland police have a new policy prohibiting them from accepting free or discounted alcohol or entry to licensed premises. Taking effect from 1 January 2012, the policy defines what police must do when reporting, retaining and disposing of gifts and benefits. Read more about Operation Tesco.
  • Evaluation of Taser reforms: The Queensland Government has supported 17 of 21 recommendations we made in evaluating how the QPS has implemented Taser reforms. These address our concerns about use of Tasers on medically vulnerable people and deployment of multiple and prolonged Taser discharges. Of the remaining recommendations, 2 are supported in part and 2 in principle. Read more about Taser reform.
  • Review of the 'evade police' provisions: The Queensland Government has supported all 13 of our recommendations which were formulated to reduce the number of police pursuits by giving police the option to allow a fleeing vehicle to ‘escape’, knowing that they have the power and investigative tools to identify the offending driver at a later stage. The government expects to implement the 10 recommendations that require legislative change by 2013. Read more about the ‘evade police’ provisions.
