Relations between the police and Indigenous people have had a troubled history, in Queensland and throughout Australia, and some of these problems persist. At the request of the Queensland Government, the Crime and Misconduct Commission is conducting an independent inquiry into some issues relating to policing in Indigenous communities, including: - What is the relationship between the police and people in remote Indigenous communities?
- How are policing services currently delivered in Indigenous communities?
- What changes should be made to improve the delivery of policing services to the remote Indigenous communities?
- What can be done to keep people in custody safe?
The CMC's Inquiry into Policing in Indigenous Communities has included public submissions, an issues paper, and a public forum in Cairns on 16 October 2007. A report, titled Restoring order: crime prevention, policing and local justice in Queensland’s Indigenous communities, containing recommendations to government was tabled in parliament on Thursday 20 November 2009 at 10.30 am.
