Statement on allegations against former Minister Merri Rose
The Crime and Misconduct Commission has examined information concerning the allegations of inappropriate conduct by former Minister Merri Rose referred to in the letter from the Member for Burnett. These allegations have been previously examined by the Commission. In January 2004, having regard to information obtained from various sources, the CMC determined that no further action was warranted. As no new information has been provided, the CMC will take no action. However, as Mr Messenger was unaware that these allegations had been previously considered by it, the CMC proposes to take no action against him. Following the substantial media coverage regarding this matter, CMC Chairperson Robert Needham says that any complaints to the CMC should be made confidentially. It is disappointing when a letter addressed to myself, and containing very serious allegations, appears in the media before the CMC has had an opportunity to assess the information and determine the appropriate response, he said. I am not discouraging genuine complaints. Anyone who has any concerns about serious misconduct should contact the CMC. But in the interests of fair play, they should not publicise that they have done so.
